Sexual Assault Awareness Month: Support, Prevention, and Care at LRMC

Sexual Assault Awareness and Prevention Month: Why Awareness Matters

April is dedicated to Sexual Assault Awareness and Prevention Month, a time to enhance education, support survivors, and work together to prevent violence in our communities. These conversations can be difficult, but awareness plays an important role in protecting health, safety, and well-being.

At Little River Medical Center, we believe care should go beyond physical health. We provide compassionate services, trusted resources, and community partnerships that help individuals feel heard, respected, and supported. LRMC has heart, and that shows in how we care for our patients and communities.

Why Sexual Assault Awareness Matters

Sexual assault impacts people of all ages, backgrounds, and communities. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, millions of individuals experience sexual violence during their lives. Education and prevention efforts help reduce risk while encouraging survivors to seek support and medical care.

When communities talk openly about sexual violence, people gain access to better information and resources. Awareness helps reduce stigma, encourages reporting, and strengthens pathways to care.

Raising awareness also helps individuals, families, and educators recognize warning signs and understand how to support someone who may be at risk.

Recognizing Signs of Sexual Violence

Sexual assault can affect individuals in many ways, including emotionally, physically, and psychologically. While each experience is different, there are signs that may indicate someone needs support.

These signs may include sudden mood changes, withdrawing from social activities, unexplained injuries, anxiety, sleep disruptions, or avoiding certain places or people. Children and teenagers may show behavioral changes, declining school performance, or emotional distress.

If you notice changes in someone you care about, creating a safe and supportive environment can help them feel comfortable opening up. Listening without judgment and guiding them toward professional support can make a meaningful difference.

Prevention Begins With Community Awareness

Preventing sexual violence requires a shared effort across individuals, families, schools, and community organizations. Education helps people understand healthy boundaries, recognize unsafe situations, and support one another.

Parents and caregivers can begin conversations early about respect, consent, and safety. Schools and youth programs can reinforce these messages by providing education and safe ways to report concerns.

When communities prioritize awareness and education, they create environments where individuals feel safer, supported, and empowered.

How LRMC Supports Survivors

At Little River Medical Center, our team approaches sensitive situations with compassion and respect. Our providers create safe spaces where patients can share their experiences and receive appropriate care.

Through our primary care services, patients can access support for both physical and emotional health. Our providers help connect patients with counseling, community resources, and follow-up care.

We partner with trusted organizations like the S.C. Coalition Against Domestic Violence & Sexual Assault (SCCADVASA), a statewide nonprofit committed to ending domestic violence and sexual assault in South Carolina. LRMC ensures every patient feels supported, respected, and connected to care.

When to Seek Medical Care

Seeking medical care after a sexual assault is an important step in protecting both health and well-being. Medical providers can treat injuries, test for infections, and connect individuals with emotional support resources.

If the assault occurred recently, a medical exam may help preserve evidence while providing necessary care. However, support is available at any time, whether days, months, or years later.

If you or someone you know needs immediate support, the National Sexual Assault Hotline is available 24 hours a day at 800-656-HOPE or through online chat.

You can also connect with local support through the S.C. Coalition Against Domestic Violence & Sexual Assault (SCCADVASA).

Supporting Healing and Community Strength

Sexual Assault Awareness and Prevention Month reminds us that awareness, education, and compassionate care all play a role in supporting survivors and strengthening communities.

At Little River Medical Center, we believe health care should always meet patients with dignity, respect, and understanding. We remain committed to expanding access to care and connecting individuals with the support they need.
